Who knows whether Spanish is the second or third language in terms of number of speakers! But I can assure you with all certainty that there are millions of friendly people in Spain and Latin America waiting to have a chat with you.
If you want to travel to Spain, I will prepare you so that your experience is even more enjoyable. If you want to read the literature, I will provide you with the knowledge and the skills to allow you to share my own passion for Allende, García Márquez, Vargas Llosa or Cortázar.
Ancient Greek
What is the best, most accurate translation of Homer or Herodotus? Well, probably none. Every translator adds her or his own interpretation to a text. And that is not a problem! What I am offering you is the knowledge and the skills to develop your own interpretation. Thus, the text and its meaning becomes yours.
The New Testament also has been translated innumerable times, but what is the real meaning of Jesus' words? What we have in the New Testament are stories that were meaningful to the communities they were written for. Again, by knowing how to read the text in Greek, you will be able to find your own meaning in it.
Latin
If you think that Latin is a dead language, think again. Half of English vocabulary comes straight from Latin. And there are at least four widely spoken European languages which come directly from Latin: Spanish, Italian, French, and Portuguese. Therefore, when you learn Latin, you are learning at least four other languages, at the same time!
Also, Latin is alive in the Church and Church music. You do not have to be a believer to appreciate Bach's Mass in B minor. Or to enjoy the secular songs of Carmina Burana!
Finally, learning classical languages is opening a door to the deepest and celestial layers of our own culture since, by learning the foundations of our language, we access the highest summits, the realm where poets and muses soar.
